Reducing Spam

Spam (unsolicited emails) affects the majority of email users; email monitoring
firm MessageLabs claims 73% of the 12.6 billion e-mails they checked during
2004 were identified as spam.

Spammers send emails to known and randomly guessed email address which is
why some users will have noticed that emails are addressed to a fictional person
at their legitimate domain name.

Sometimes spam emails also contain attachments which carry viruses or are designed to obtain confidential information about you.

There are a number of steps you can take to reduce spam including:

* Install spam blocking software
* Delete unsolicited emails from unrecognised senders
* Never make a purchase from an unsolicited email
* Never respond to any spam messages or click on any links in the message - including 'remove' and 'unsubscribe' links as these just confirms the email address is valid
* Deactivate the 'catch all' function in your hosting control panel
* Have and use one or two secondary email addresses for giving to websites requiring registration
* Avoid using your mail email address on websites, newsgroups or forums
