What is FTP?

FTP or File Transfer Protocol is the way in which you send your files (such as html, images.etc) are sent from your computer to the web server for the world to see.

To use FTP, you must first download some FTP software such as SmartFTP. Within your ftp program use your account username and password to connect to your webspace (the "ftp server" is ftp.yourdomain.com). Once a connection has been established, an FTP program will usually mimic windows explorer where you simply drag the files on your computer over the window showing your webspace and drop the files in there. and the program will do the rest. Provided you have uploaded your files into the "public_html" folder, your files will instantly become visible to the world.

FTP also allows you to delete, rename and modify your files as well as advanced features such as permissions (CHMOD) for scripts.
