Bounced emails I never sent / Emails from my domain

Q. I've had a large mumber of bounced emails for messages I've never sent and/or I receive emails from addresses at my domain. Has my account been hacked?

A. This is a common issue and it is unlikely that your email account has been hacked. Spammers usually set 'false' email addresses in the from field of their email programme.

Often these addresses are real addresses or addresses ar real domains belonging to innocent webmasters. When the spam emails are rejected the rejection messages are sent to the 'from' address.

Unfortunately there is no way to stop people doing this however you may wish to deactivate the 'catch all' option in your email settings (within your cpanel or HELM control panel) which will stop you receiving messages sent to fictional email addresses at your domain.
